The past few attempts to order this have been met with "sorry, we’ve sold out". Today was my lucky day.

A huge dish arrived with a mound of rice flecked with strips of ginger and an awesome looking piece of drumstick. Cracking though the crisp skin into the moist flesh confirmed that this was a good piece of chicken. The crisp skin was actually a thin layer of batter rather than the skin itself, and you could taste the Thai-style marinade of lemongrass and garlic.

A tart sauce of tamarind, ginger and garlic went well with the chicken, but needed sweetness to balance the mouth-puckering tartness.

365.159 – Friday Night is Pizza Night

Every friday night I make pizzas for dinner. I’ve copped a little bit of flack from a friend on facebook as I don’t make my own pizza dough but my excuse to that is I have baby girls =P

Last nights pizzas:
Caramelised Onion & Mushroom
Caramelise some onion in olive oil with some sugar until desired colour/taste. Let cool, sprinkle over base (either spread with tomato pasta or olive oil), sprinkle over sliced mushrooms (i use swiss brown), top with parmesan and mixed pizza cheese (normally mozarella, cheddar)

Artichoke & Feta
This was so tasty!
I grabbed two smallish jars of quartered marinated artichoke jars, drained them and kept about 2 teaspoons of the marinade (spread this on the pizza base). Sprinkle over some thinly sliced red onion, halved cherry tomatoes, cubed feta, add the artichoke pieces – top with parmesan & pizza cheese mix.

Bake in oven for about 20-25 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.

I normally try to change one of the pizzas every week, Larry loves the mushroom one so it stays Last week I did a pear & blue cheese pizza that was amazing!

This is also a food shot I am happy with – apart from the fact that I used the halogens in the kitchen for lighting. That can’t be helped – time of night and all that

Local Threads Fashion Show 9-20-09 20

I went out to support the Local Threads Fashion Show at Founder’s. The clothes were beautiful and they helped support the Kids Food Basket.

What: “LOCAL THREADS FASHION SHOW” a benefit event for KIDS FOOD BASKET.
Where: Founders Brewing Company (235 Grandville SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503)
When: September 20th, 2009 8pm

The Second Annual Local Threads Fashion Show will be held Sunday September 20th, 2009 at 8pm, at Founders Brewing Company on Grandville Avenue in Grand Rapids.

The event will feature lines made by such local designers as Lynn Anne Serulla, Khristi Menardie Yokum of Bliss Clothing, The GR8, Coat of Many Colors, Nate Dorotiak, and biking gear from the new Commute Bike Shop on Division Avenue. Echo Salon will feature their talents by styling the hair of the models. Event organizer and designer Lynn Anne Serulla offers the event as “a great way for people to network with others, also to keep Grand Rapids looking fresh in the latest gear from local talent. But it’s the guests that make it what it is.”

This year, Local Threads will be donating it’s proceeds to Grand Rapids own Kids Food Basket. Since there is no government sponsored program available, Kids Food Basket was created to combat the childhood food insecurity problem in Grand Rapids. This organization provides a healthy sack supper to approximately 1,346 elementary school children at 13 schools. These children have been identified by school officials as being nutritionally at-risk and would not otherwise be receiving an evening meal. The bagged supper in addition to the federal school food program puts the children at the daily-recommended requirement. Children who receive the appropriate daily requirement of nutrition have better attendance, grow stronger, and have improved grades at school.

The event will be per person, and will offer up sounds by DJ Spydre Murphy.

Poutine from Potato Champion

Man. What can I say? Our city is finally blessed with access to poutine that does not come from my kitchen.

Potato Champion is a cart at the intersection of SE 12th & Hawthorne that specialises in frites with a variety of dipping sauces. I was, predictably, more interested in their poutine than anything else.

I have to say that the poutine was pretty good as the quality of the fries was high, as you may be able to tell in the picture. The gravy and curds were good too but I was a little put off by a slight sweet aftertaste after each bite. Mac thought that that could be due to the potatoes. So, they’re not perfect but for a place that’s thousands of miles away from my beloved Montréal, they’re pretty good. Frankly, it’s a lot better than that crap I had at some random fast food place off of Parc one time.

I also have to mention that it turned out the guy who runs Potato Champion, Mike, is a guy that I know from a couple of years back. I was amused (and proud) that he told me someone was recently talking about me when he had mentioned poutine.
